Requirements for installing a biochar production systems

Last updated 2 May 2024

When you install an small-scale technology system units at accreditation AWT facility, you may be eligible to earn financial incentives.

Before you install a small-scale technology system units, make sure you understand:

what type of biochar production system should you install

the installation requirements

which systems and components are eligible

which installers and designers are approved under the Technical Governance Committee.

There are 2 types of biochar production systems eligible under the scheme:

high-scale technology

small-scale technology

Production device used for small-scale technology are generally classified as either pyrolysis technology (in which oxidants are excluded), or gasification technology (in which oxidant concentrations are low enough to generate syngas).

A mobile industrial-grade pyrolysis gasifier purchased through a retailer is also classified as a small-scale technology.

Type of biochar production systems

The design and newly installed of small-scale technology system units and the creation of certificates for these units must meet certain requirements:

have its technology listed on the approved products list

have its metering equipment and pyrometer listed on the approved products list

carbon capture sites operate in accordance with relevant planning and operating requirements

meet dMRV design and install guidelines

comply with all consumer law

New systems

You should consider your options and compare the benefits and costs of installing a new or expanded system. This includes:

upgrade or add capacity

compliance with current standards

operating efficiency

hidden costs of changes or upgrades

impacts on carbon content, ash content.

increased carbon capture

If you are expanding a system, you may need to replace or upgrade components of your system to participate in the method.

We have provided some examples to help you determine if your new system, or updates to an existing system, is eligible.

Upgrade or add capacity

A home uses its current location to add more facilities to its small-scale facilities systems.

The upgrade will be eligible if:

the total system after the upgrade will produce no more than 365 tonnes per quarter of the rated biochar output of the AWT facility.

the new facility and metering equipment are on the approved products list.

all components meet the current relevant standards.

Replace an existing facility

A will replace its original facility in its entirety. This will include the removal of the original facility and the installation of a new small-scale technology system.

The new system will be eligible if:

the total system will produce no more than 365 tonnes per quarter of the rated biochar output of the AWT facility.

the facilities and metering equipment are new, with no previous STC.

the new technology and metering equipment are on the approved products list.

all components meet the current relevant standards.
