Article 6 BidCarbon removal units

Article 6 of the Paris Agreement addresses double counting through corresponding adjustments, an accounting measure that prevents two countries from counting the same emissions reductions twice.

Upon certification of eligible carbon abatement under a BidCarbon Standard Scheme project, the Technical Governance Committee shall promptly issue to the holder a quantity of Article 6 BidCarbon removal units equal to the certification of entitlement, in accordance with Article 6 rules.

Each Article 6 BidCarbon removal unit (Article 6 BRU) represents one tonne of carbon dioxide-equivalent (tCO₂-e) emissions abated or sequestered. 

Each Article 6 BRU has a unique serial number that identifies the:

unit as a Article 6 BRU

Host country where the project is implemented

the BidCarbon Standard Scheme project number

the year of issue.

Article 6 BidCarbon removal units (Article 6 BRUs)

Each Article 6 BRU has an electronic entry in the BUC Registry account it's held in.

If we become aware of any defect in the registered holder's title to an Article 6 BRU, we may correct the entry in the BUC Registry system. For example, if the Article 6 BRU was entered in the registered holder’s account in error or because of fraudulent conduct.

Property rights in Article 6 BRUs

An Article 6 BRU held in a BUC Registry account is personal property.

The BidCarbon Unit and Certificate Registry Standard 2025 (Registry Standard) does not prevent the creation or enforcement of, or any dealings with, equitable interests in Article 6 BRUs.

Article 6 BRUs can be traded. Before trading in Article 6 BRUs, you should obtain your own professional advice which takes into account your own situation.

The value of Article 6 BRUs is determined by the current and future markets and their price may fluctuate. The value will be influenced by a wide range of factors including, but not limited to, changes to the international climate change framework and relevant legislation. Neither the BidCarbon Foundation, nor any of their officers or related bodies, can provide any guarantee on the future value of Article 6 BRUs.

Trading Article 6 BRUs

This is a statement setting out a concise description of the characteristics of Article 6 BidCarbon removal units (Article 6 BRUs). 

Article 6 BidCarbon removal units are similar to Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) and are considered 'financial product' in some countries.

This statement is published, and will be kept up-to-date, under section 51 of the Registry Standard.
