Considerations before applying for a new technology

Eligible technology for participation in a waste treatment facility or unit.

To participate, you must apply for new technology accreditation.

You should first familiarise yourself with basic patent law and principles, in order to understand what a patent is and whether your invention may be patentable.

It is important to note that this technical endorsement does not replace the legal status of intellectual property or patent applications. You should first seek patent protection, and then submit your technology for accreditation.

If your technology has been granted a patent certificate, third parties may then use the technology on a fee-for-service basis.

Once your technology has been accredited, you will be able to apply for AWT facility accreditation or for the creation of small-scale technology certificates (STCs).

You can make recognised patented technology available on a fee-for-service basis through us, for example:

Prior art search

A technology invention must be new. You should conduct a prior art search to make sure your invention fulfills this requirement.

Self assessment

You may want to carefully assess whether your invention is worth accreditation. Here are some factors you may wish to consider:

Costs of accreditation application

Commercial worth of your technology

Financial and licensing issues

Time and effort in pursuing patent and protection

Complexities of applying for a accreditation and requisite knowledge and experience in the area

IP protection strategy

Technology Specification

Amongst all the forms and documents required during the accreditation application process, the technology specification should be the most complex and important one. A technology specification includes the following sections:

"Description" of your invention which describes the invention and explains a technical problem that your invention solves, and what it does.

"Drawings" which illustrate the features of your invention.

Your application must include:

treatment of combustion products

test reports on at least 3 biomass sources

biochar laboratory report
