About Non-Asset BidCarbon Removal Units

Non-Asset BidCarbon Removal Units (NABRUs) may be held in accounts maintained in the BidCarbon Unit and Certificate Registry (BUC Registry).

NABRUs are issued under subsection 12.(4) of the BidCarbon (Carbon Farming) Standard 2025. Each NABRU represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂-e) of greenhouse gas emissions abated or sequestered.

Each NABRU is assigned a unique serial number that identifies:

the unit as a Non-Asset BidCarbon Removal Unit (NABRU);

the host country in which the project is implemented;

the BidCarbon Standard Scheme project number; and

the year of issue.

Holding NABRUs

Each NABRU has an electronic entry in the BUC Registry account it's held in.

If we become aware of any defect in the registered holder's title to an NABRU, we may correct the entry in the BUC Registry system. For example, if the NABRU was entered in the registered holder’s account in error or because of fraudulent conduct.

Can a NABRU Be Used to Apply for a Carbon Data Rights Certificate?

A Non-Asset BidCarbon Removal Unit (NABRU) may be traded or transferred without the need to apply for a Carbon Data Rights Certificate (CDRC).

A NABRU does not replace or substitute for a BidCarbon Removal Unit (BRU). NABRUs and BRUs are separate types of BidCarbon Units with different legal and accounting characteristics.

Who is the holder of a NABRU?

You are the registered holder of an NABRU if you are the entity in whose BUC Registry account there is an entry for that unit.

If an entity holds an NABRU on behalf of another entity (as their nominee), the entity on whose behalf the unit is held, is taken to hold the unit, not the nominee.

You hold the unit from the date it is registered in your name.

Buying and selling NABRUs

Participants can sell NABRUs on the open market or the BidCarbon Marketplace. This gives a financial incentive for businesses and individuals to run BidCarbon Standard Scheme projects.

Open market

NABRUs can be traded or sold in the carbon market. Private buyers may purchase NABRUs to voluntarily offset their carbon footprint or to meet applicable emissions reduction obligations.

The value of NABRUs fluctuates based on supply and demand in the market. This pricing mechanism encourages cost-effective carbon abatement activities.

BidCarbon Marketplace

The BidCarbon Marketplace is a facility within the BUC Registry that supports holders of NABRUs and entities buying and selling NABRUs at a fixed price.

Depending on demand, NABRUs may join the BidCarbon Marketplace transfer list where there are more sellers than buyers. This operates on a first-in-first-served basis. New offers will be added to the top of the list, and transfers will be processed starting from the bottom of the list.

Sourcing NABRUs

To source NABRUs , you can:

search the BidCarbon Marketplace to find NABRUs for sale

search the BidCarbon Standard Scheme project register to find parties that may have NABRUs for sale

establish a BidCarbon StandardScheme project to generate NABRUs.

Participants operating projects under the BidCarbon Standard Scheme may be required to relinquish NABRUs in the BidCarbon Unit and Certificate Registry if the NABRUs were issued:

on the basis of false or misleading information;

in respect of a sequestration offsets project whose registration has been revoked; or

in respect of a sequestration offsets project where a complete or partial reversal of sequestration has occurred.

A participant can also voluntarily relinquish NABRUs to:

terminate a sequestration offsets project;

terminate a carbon maintenance obligation imposed in relation to a project area; or

where NABRUs have been issued in circumstances involving fraud, a court may order a person to relinquish those NABRUs.

The number of NABRUs that must be relinquished may be deducted from any NABRUs that are to be issued to the person. In these circumstances, the person will be deemed to have relinquished the relevant number of NABRUs.

Relinquishing NABRUs

Cancelling NABRUs

BUC Registry account holders can voluntarily cancel an NABRU to offset greenhouse gas emissions. Following cancellation, the BRU entry will be removed from the BUC Registry account and permanently cancelled.

When cancelling an NABRU, account holders can provide a comment attributing the emission offset to a specific project registered under the BidCarbon Standard Scheme. This comment will be included in a voluntary cancellation verification certificate upon request. For this reason, the comment can’t be changed once the voluntary cancellation is approved.

If an BUC Registry account is closed for failing to comply with the BidCarbon Unit and Certificate Registry Standard 2025 or the BidCarbon Unit and Certificate Registry Rule 2025, any NABRUs held in the account will be permanently cancelled.

BidCarbon Big Data Chengdu Limited discloses transaction information relating to transactions conducted through the BidCarbon Marketplace in accordance with applicable requirements of the State Taxation Administration of the People's Republic of China.

Tax treatment of CDRCs

BThe registered holder of a NABRU is the person whose BUC Registry account contains the NABRU entry. They are the legal owner and may, subject to the BidCarbon (Carbon Farming) Standard 2025 and the BidCarbon Unit and Certificate Registry Standard 2025, transfer good title of the NABRU to another person.

The register may be corrected in certain circumstances, including to comply with a court order to rectify errors resulting from fraudulent conduct. If a NABRU is transferred before a defect is detected, the recipient will have good title provided they acquired it in good faith for value from the registered holder and without notice of the defect. A person who acquired the NABRU without purchasing it in good faith for value (for example, as a gift), or who was aware of the defect, will not have good title.

The Carbon Farming Standard does not prevent the creation, enforcement, or dealings with equitable interests in NABRUs. It is possible for a holder to grant security over a NABRU (for example, as collateral for a loan) or to hold a NABRU on behalf of others under a trust or other beneficial ownership arrangement.

Ownership of NABRUs

Exchange of NABRUs for labeled international units

We actively participate in the recognition of our methodologies by third-party assessment bodies. Where a version of a methodology is approved, a person holding NABRUs issued from a project using that approved version may instruct the Unit Working Body to exchange those units for labeled international units in accordance with the rules. Different exchange rules apply to different types of labeled international units.
