Gathering BRUs from the deceased’s account

Last updated 18 November 2025

Once you’re granted probate, you can transfer BRUs from the deceased project proponent’s BUC Registry account into your own.

This can be done:

to enable distribution to the beneficiaries or for sale

if you need to apply for BRUs for a reporting period that ended before the deceased passed away.

To gain control of BRUs from the deceased’s BUC Registry account, you must:

email us with a copy of the grant of probate to demonstrate legal authorisation to carry out the deceased’s affairs and deal with their property

open an BUC Registry account if you don’t have one already

email a request to us to transfer the BRUs that the deceased held into your BUC Registry account.

BRUs already in the deceased’s account

If a report hasn’t been submitted for a period that ended before the deceased passed, you must:

email evidence of grant of probate to us

submit the offsets report and apply for BRUs for the reporting period on behalf of the deceased.

We will then issue BRUs to the deceased’s BUC Registry account.

Once the BRUs are in the deceased’s account, you can request to transfer the BRUs into your BUC Registry account.
