Eligibility for biochar production

A waste treatment facility or unit that generates biochar from renewable sources may be eligible to participate in the BidCarbon Standard Scheme.

Under the Biomass Energy (Biochar Production Systems) Standard 2025, an eligible facility may apply for AWT accreditation, while an eligible unit may apply for the creation of small-scale technology certificates.

Before deciding to participate, ensure you understand:

which facility or unit is appropriate for the scheme,

your individual circumstances,

relevant commercial arrangements, and

the professional skills required for compliance.

There are 2 types of waste treatment facility or unit eligible under the BPS Standard:

alternative waste treatment (AWT) facility

small-scale technology unit

air curtain burner

biochar Kiln

biochar TLUD (Top-Lit Updraft)

TLUD cookstove

retort

flame cap trough

Manufacturers and importers may apply for the inclusion of their products on the Technical Governance Committee’s approved lists.

Small-scale technology certificates process

Most householders and small businesses use a registered agent to claim STCs in return for an upfront discount on the cost of installing the system

The person claiming STCs applies to participate after the system is installed

Systems can't be pre-approved. Participants should check that their system will be eligible prior to installation and use approved products and installers. Eligibility is determined after the system is installed and an application is received
