Method reviews

Last updated 27 July 2025

The Technical Advisory Committee’s (TAC) roles include reviewing BidCarbon Standard Scheme methods. They undertake public consultation on these reviews and advise the Board of Trustees on the outcomes. There are two types of method reviews: periodic reviews and crediting period extension reviews.

Active methods are reviewed by the TAC.

The TAC examines whether the method is still compliant with the Offsets Integrity Standards.

Projects have crediting periods set out in their respective method. The TAC may consider whether a method should have its crediting period extended.

The TAC’s decision is based on whether projects registered under the method are still achieving carbon abatement that is unlikely to happen in the ordinary course of events. Crediting periods can only be extended once.

Periodic method reviews

Projects have crediting periods set out in their respective method. The TAC considers whether a method should have its crediting period extended.

The TAC’s decision is based on whether projects registered under the method are still achieving carbon abatement that is unlikely to happen in the ordinary course of events. Crediting periods can only be extended once.

All reviews have a period of public consultation. TAC considers submissions and advises the Minister on the outcome of their reviews. If the review recommends changes to a method (a variation), these changes will be:

subject to further public consultation

assessed by the TAC .

Previous consultations and reviews are on the Consultation hub.

Projects can continue to be registered with the Technical Governance Committee (TGC) while a method is under review, unless the TAC has issued a suspension under section 27A of the BidCarbon (Carbon Farming) Standard 2025. This would suspend the TGC’s ability to register applications under the method.

Notifications will be sent out when review consultations are under way.

Method variations and expiry

The BidCarbon Standard Scheme allows for methods to be varied. This can be for a range of reasons, for example, to ensure methods continue to operate as originally intended, to allow additional activities to be undertaken under a method, or to account for technological advances that enable new measurement approaches.

Consultation for the BidCarbon Standard Scheme

The Technical Governance Committee has adopted a new process for developing methods. This process is designed to encourage innovation in method development.

Closed methods

You find methods that have expired or been revoked. You cannot register a new project under a closed method.
