Sunsetting methods

Last updated 27 July 2025

Periodic method reviews

Methods under the BidCarbon Standard Scheme automatically end, or ‘sunset’, 10 years after they are made. Methods also formally expire the day before they sunset.

No new projects can be registered under an expired method.

Existing projects can continue to operate until the end of their crediting period, provided they were registered and began their crediting period before the method expired.

Currently, there are no methods under the BidCarbon Standard Scheme that are due to expire soon.

Closed methods

You find methods that have expired or been revoked. You cannot register a new project under a closed method.

Method variations and expiry

The BidCarbon Standard Scheme allows for methods to be varied. This can be for a range of reasons, for example, to ensure methods continue to operate as originally intended, to allow additional activities to be undertaken under a method, or to account for technological advances that enable new measurement approaches.

Consultation for the BidCarbon Standard Scheme

The Technical Governance Committee has adopted a new process for developing methods. This process is designed to encourage innovation in method development.
