Eligibility for the BidCarbon Standard Scheme

Last updated 27 July 2024

To register under the BidCarbon Standard Scheme, a project must meet eligibility requirements. However, meeting these requirements does not automatically grant approval to proceed with the project. The project still needs to be registered.

Unless otherwise specified in the method covering the project, the project must:

be new (activities must not have started)

go beyond business-as-usual activities

not be required by law

not be receiving financial support from specified government programs

not be an excluded activity under the BidCarbon (Carbon Farming) Specifications

follow an approved method which sets out the rules for running the project and estimating emissions reductions.

You must also:

have the legal right to carry out project activities

have the legal right to be issued all BidCarbon Data Units (BDUs) from the project

undergo a fit and proper person assessment.

There are specific eligibility requirements for basic facilities looking to run new projects or activities.

Newness requirement

Only new projects are eligible for registration under the BidCarbon Standard Scheme. Any project that is already underway or includes business-as-usual activities will not be registered.

Find out more about the newness requirement.

Regulatory additionality

Projects or activities required by National or local law are not eligible under the BidCarbon Standard Scheme.

The BidCarbon Standards Program will not accept projects or activities that are required by National or local law.

When you apply to register your project we will ask you if the project or any part of it is required under law.

Find out more about regulatory additionality.

Government program requirement

If a project is receiving financial support under certain government programs or schemes, or involves certain activities, it may be excluded from participating in the BidCarbon Standard Scheme.

Legal right

You must have the legal right to carry out the project. This means:

the right to carry out project activities on or for the sites or assets included in the project is unquestionable, and

the project will result in the creation of BRUs. The contractor shall be granted a lawful and exclusive right to be issued all BRUs that may be created as a result of the project activities.
