A guide to the PyCCS method

The production and sequestration of biochar (BC) may be described as a Pyrogenic Carbon Capture and Storage (PyCCS) carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solution. More specifically, it is a form of pre-combustion Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), distinct from the more common post-combustion CCS methods.

Biochar represents a fundamentally different approach to carbon dioxide reduction and removal. It involves the deliberate extraction of a solid, carbon-rich product from biomass prior to combustion, thereby preventing that carbon from being returned to the atmosphere.

When incorporated into soil, biochar may improve agricultural and horticultural soil performance. Importantly, biochar can remain stable in soil for centuries, and potentially longer.

Accordingly, biochar use constitutes a viable means of long-term carbon sequestration, whilst also potentially enhancing plant growth under many conditions. Projects producing and sequestering biochar may be eligible to earn BidCarbon Units.

To conduct a PyCCS project and earn BidCarbon Units, make sure you read and understand the applicable method and other requirements of the BidCarbon Standard. To do this, you will need to:

Download and understand the BidCarbon (Pyrogenic Carbon Capture and Storage in Agricultural Systems) Methodology and Data Asset (the PyCCS Method).

Read and understand how the BidCarbon (Carbon Farming) Standard 2025 (the Carbon Farming Standard) and the BidCarbon (Carbon Farming) Rule 2025 (the Carbon Farming Rule) apply to your project.

Use the applicable calculation tools and procedures specified by the PyCCS Method.

Ensure that you have the legal right to conduct the project.

Apply to participate in the BidCarbon Standard and open the BUC Registry account required for the PyCCS project.

Set up the project in accordance with the requirements of the PyCCS Method and establish the required record-keeping and monitoring systems.

Engage a Category B Auditor early on in your project. Submit audits of your project according to your audit schedule.

Determine the amount of emissions your project avoids using the calculations in Part 4 of the PyCCS Method.

Submit your project report as well as your application for BidCarbon Units to the Technical Governance Committee for assessment.
